Norman cantor in the wake of the plague5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() This makes for amusing reading, though those seeking an orderly narrative may be frustrated. Cantor also details ways in which the Black Death changed history, at both the personal level (family lines dying out) and the political (the Plantagenet kings may well have been able to hold onto France had their resources not been so diminished).Ĭantor veers from topic to topic, from dynastic worries to the Dance of Death, and from peasants' rights to Perpendicular Gothic. Noted medievalist Norman Cantor tells the story of the pandemic and its widespread effects in In the Wake of the Plague.Īfter giving an overview, Cantor describes various theories about the medical crisis, from contemporary fears of a Jewish conspiracy to poison the water (and the resulting atrocities against European Jews) to a growing belief among modern historians that both bubonic plague and anthrax caused the spiraling death rates. One-third of Western Europe's population died between 13, victims of the Black Death. ![]() ![]() ![]() Sarah is attracted to Raymond Boynton, while Jefferson Cope admits to wanting to take Nadine Boynton away from her husband, Lennox Boynton, and the influence of her mother-in-law. Mrs Boynton is sadistic and domineering, behaviours which she may have carried over from her original profession of prison warden. The novel opens as the family and the victim are introduced through the perspective of Sarah King and Dr Gerard, who discuss the behaviour of the family. When she is found dead on a trip to Petra, Poirot proposes to solve the case in twenty-four hours, even though he has no way of knowing whether it was murder. Holidaying in Jerusalem, Poirot overhears Raymond Boynton telling his sister, "You do see, don't you, that she's got to be killed?" Their stepmother, Mrs Boynton, is a sadistic tyrant who dominates her family. The INSIDE of this story was bigger than the out. This book was like reading the 2nd chapter of the O.A., while being stuck in the 10 minute hallway in the house in The House of Leaves. We learn in Hideaway that Kai definitely has a dark side. Although he was a big portion of Corrupt, we still didn’t know much about him. I love the tone that Pen sets, it’s creepy, it literally puts pressure on your chest, making it hard to breath. I love that I could open this book up and already feel my peripheral vision start to darken. So once it was announced that Kai’s story was next, I couldn’t wait to see what Pen could come up with. Corrupt is still an all-time favorite novel of mine, and is comparable to absolutely nothing else that I have ever read. Hideaway (Devil's Night #2) by Penelope Douglas ![]() Mission economy book5/29/2023 ![]() Sure enough, she makes clear that “moonshots must be understood not as siloed big endeavours, perhaps the pet project of a minister, but rather as bold societal goals which can be achieved by collaboration on a large scale between public and private entities.” In short, it’s about setting ambitious goals that will make a difference to people’s lives, and collaborating across sectors to make it happen. Still, it’s Mariana Mazzucato and she’s better than that. Mazzucato’s book doesn’t help matters with a front cover that literally depicts money being thrown, in the form of a paper plane. Dominic Cummings was a big fan of the moonshot, and talked the government into a string of ‘high risk, high reward’ projects that have mainly meant throwing millions of pounds at private consultants. ![]() ![]() For me, the word implies pet projects for national pride or politician’s egos, or perhaps the egos of their megalomaniacal advisors. ![]() ![]() ![]() Following her divorce, she emigrated to Canada, where she committed to becoming a children's author and illustrator. ![]() She taught at alternative schools in New York and Ontario throughout the 1960s and early 1970s.
